Materials & Care

Every Instrument in the Korym catalog is built from one material: platinum-cured silicone. Not a blend, not a coating over another substrate — the entire body is cast from it. Platinum cure is a catalytic process (as opposed to tin-cure or peroxide-cure silicone) that produces a non-porous, chemically stable surface with no residual byproducts. That's the engineering reason it's the only material this catalog uses.

Why Platinum-Cured Silicone and Nothing Else

  • Non-porous surface: nothing to trap bacteria between uses, and nothing for odor or residue to bind to.
  • Chemically inert: platinum-cure leaves no catalytic residue in the finished part, unlike tin-cure silicone.
  • Consistent feel over time: the material doesn't off-gas, degrade, or change texture with normal use and cleaning.
  • Precise casting: platinum-cure silicone holds fine surface detail and dimensional tolerance through the mold — the reason the spec sheet on each product page is accurate to the millimeter.

Cleaning

Before first use and after every session:

  1. Rinse under warm running water.
  2. Wash with a mild, unscented soap or a dedicated toy cleaner — work it over the full surface, including any texture or seam lines.
  3. Rinse thoroughly until no soap residue remains.
  4. Air-dry completely on a clean surface before storing.

Avoid alcohol-based cleaners, bleach, and abrasive scrubbing — none are necessary on a non-porous surface and all of them shorten the material's working life. If a specific Instrument's product page lists a higher-heat cleaning method (e.g. boiling or a dishwasher top-rack cycle), that instruction is specific to that model's build and is stated on its own page — check there first rather than assuming it applies catalog-wide.

Storage

Store each Instrument separately, in a breathable pouch or its original packaging, away from direct sunlight and away from contact with other silicone items. Silicone-on-silicone contact over time can cause surface tackiness between two different pieces — a storage issue, not a material defect.

Lubricant Compatibility

Water-based lubricant only. This is a hard rule, not a preference: silicone-based lubricant will degrade a silicone surface on contact — softening, tackiness, and surface breakdown are the documented result, and it isn't reversible. Water-based lubricant carries no such risk and is compatible with every Instrument in this catalog. Oil-based lubricant is not recommended either — it isn't guaranteed to break down the material, but it can trap bacteria against the non-porous surface and is difficult to fully clean off.

What Shortens the Life of the Material

  • Silicone-based lubricant (degrades the surface — see above)
  • Prolonged UV / direct sunlight exposure during storage
  • Alcohol-based or bleach-based cleaners
  • Contact with other silicone surfaces during storage

Handled this way, platinum-cured silicone holds its dimensional accuracy and surface feel indefinitely — it's why the material is the only one this catalog builds with.
